We are thrilled to announce that Bumiterra has officially become a Certified B Corporation, joining a global movement of businesses committed to using the economy as a force for good. This certification marks a significant milestone in our journey as a nature-based climate solutions company, reaffirming our commitment to ethical governance, environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and indigenous well-being.

🌱 What Is B Corp Certification?

The B Corporation (B Corp) Certification is awarded by B Lab, a non-profit organization that rigorously assesses and verifies companies based on comprehensive standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Unlike traditional certifications that focus solely on specific practices (such as environmental compliance or fair trade), B Corp Certification evaluates a company’s entire business model and operational impact across five interrelated dimensions:

  1. Governance - This category measures a company’s overall mission, ethics, accountability, and transparency. It assesses how well a company integrates its social and environmental objectives into its business strategy, decision-making, and governance structures.

  2. Workers - This section examines how a company treats and supports its employees. It considers the extent to which the company provides safe working conditions, fair compensation, opportunities for growth, and fosters employee well-being and satisfaction.

  3. Community - This dimension evaluates the company’s social impact on the communities where it operates, sources from, and sells to. It includes how the company contributes to local economies, addresses inequity, and supports vulnerable populations.

  4. Environment- This section measures a company’s environmental impact in terms of its resource use, emissions, waste, and contributions to ecosystem health. It considers both operational practices and products/services that contribute to environmental restoration or degradation.

  5. Customers - This dimension assesses how a company’s products or services impact its customers, and whether it delivers those services with integrity, transparency, and a commitment to creating positive outcomes.

To be certified, a company must achieve a minimum verified score of 80 points on the B Impact Assessment (BIA) procedure, a holistic, evidence-based tool used by over 100,000 companies worldwide. In doing so, certified B Corps companies are those who commit to uphold these dimensions and continuous improvement and legal accountability by embedding their purpose into their corporate governance structure.

So, Bumiterra’s certification reflects not only what we do — but how we do it.

📊 2024 Bumiterra B Impact Results

Bumiterra received a verified B Impact Score of 82.1, exceeding the threshold for certification and significantly outperforming the global median score of 50.9 among companies that complete the assessment.

The B Impact Assessment evaluated our operations across five key impact areas, each reflecting our holistic approach to climate action, community engagement, and responsible business growth. This is how we perform in each dimensions:

🌐 1. Governance (14/25)

Bumiterra Governance score as seen on the B Corp

Comparison of our company’s performance across four contexts average

The Governance section evaluates how well a company integrates ethical principles, social and environmental objectives, and stakeholder accountability into its core operations and legal structure. Bumiterra achieved a Governance score of 14.0 out of 25, with this points received from three main components: Mission & Engagement, Ethics & Transparency, and Mission Locked.

Bumiterra earned 5.9 points in the Mission & Engagement subcategory, reflecting a clear articulation of our purpose and consistent alignment with environmental and social goals. This demonstrates how the company embeds its mission across daily practices, from reforestation efforts to collaborations with Indigenous communities, while actively engaging both leadership and employees through internal communication and decision-making. In the area of Ethics & Transparency, Bumiterra scored 5.6 points, driven by our ethical standards and a culture of openness. This includes transparency in operations, clear standing on anti-corruption and conflict of interest, as well as inclusive decision-making process.

Lastly, the company received 2.5 points for +Mission Locked, which is a supplementary points given for companies that has taken legal steps to safeguard its mission through its corporate structure. This involves embedding stakeholder-focused commitments into official governing documents. A company that is "mission locked" ensures that its social and environmental commitments are not easily diluted, even in the event of leadership or ownership changes. Bumiterra’s inclusion of this safeguard reinforces the longevity and credibility of its impact-driven business model.

👷 2. Workers (27.7/50)

Comparison of our company’s performance across four contexts average

The Workers section of the B Impact Assessment evaluates a company’s contribution to the well-being and development of its employees. Bumiterra earned a total score of 27.7 out of 50, reflecting its efforts across four key areas: financial security, health and safety, career development, and employee engagement and satisfaction.

We recognize that our 4.8 score in Financial Security is great but pose as an area of improvement. While we always do our best to provide fair compensation and stability, this result reminds us that more intentional support is needed to ensure our team’s financial well-being, especially as we grow. Similarly, in Health, Wellness, and Safety, we’re aware that our practices need to evolve to better address mental health, daily safety standards, and overall employee wellness. As a young company, our current stage naturally comes with financial and operational constraints, but we’re committed to scaling not just our impact but also the security and benefits we can offer our team.

On a more positive note, we performed stronger in Career Development, receiving a 5.7 score as we do our best, with our own current limitations, in providing opportunities for professional growth, because we believe that when individuals are empowered in their roles, the whole organization moves forward. And most notably, we received a score of 8.3 in Engagement & Satisfaction. We’re grateful for this recognition, which speaks to the strong culture we've collectively built. We do our best to listen, encourage feedback, and create a collaborative environment where people feel seen, heard, and genuinely appreciated. As a mission-driven organization, we know that the success of our reforestation efforts is inseparable from the well-being of the people who carry them out.

🏘️ 3. Community (23.9/50)

Comparison of our company’s performance across four contexts average

At Bumiterra, our connection with communities is the heart of everything we do. With a Community score of 23.9 out of 50, we are proud of our continued efforts to collaborate meaningfully with the local, Indigenous, and rural populations that live closest to the forests we help restore, and where we must do more.

We scored 9.5 in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, a reflection of our commitment to working closely with Indigenous and rural communities, and ensuring that local knowledge and leadership are central to our programs. With equal working gender and a hiring approach rooted in locality, we are proud of this early foundation. Then, our Economic Impact score of 7.5 highlights how we generate livelihood opportunities through our programs, from hiring local workers and forest rangers to facilitating alternative income streams. We believe forest protection is only sustainable when local communities can thrive alongside it.

But of course, there is still room for growth for us. In Civic Engagement & Giving, we scored 3.6, which reflects while we’ve run school donations and community-led workshops, these efforts remain sporadic. We are now reflecting on how to formalize these contributions in a more consistent and strategic way. Meanwhile, Supply Chain Management, with a score of 0.4, highlights an area we have not yet developed. As most of our work is service-based and field-driven, we currently have a minimal purchasing supply chain. However, we understand that as we grow, our choices around procurement, partnerships, and sourcing will have real-world impacts. We are grateful to the communities who continue to teach, challenge, and walk alongside us. And as we expand our capacity in the future, we will deepen our responsibility to those who make this work possible.

🌳 4. Environment (11.8/20)

Comparison of our company’s performance across four contexts average

At Bumiterra, restoring nature isn’t just part of our business, it is our business. Our environmental impact score of 11.8 out of 20 reflects the steps we’ve taken, and the areas we’re committed to improving, as we scale climate action through reforestation. As a nature-based climate solutions company, Bumiterra is uniquely positioned to turn environmental impact into environmental healing. These scores are a snapshot of our current progress and not a finish line, as we are committed to raising every one of these scores as we grow our mission.

We scored 3.5 in Environmental Management, reflecting our foundational systems to track and reduce harm, but also pointing to the need for more structured policies and measurable outcomes. While our fieldwork prioritizes biodiversity, native ecosystem restoration, and zero-burning practices, we recognize that we must apply the same level of discipline to our day-to-day operations in our city office. While in the Air & Climate and Water category, scoring 2.6 and 0.0 respectively, largely because our Scope 2 and 3 GHGs are still difficult to track at this stage. As a hybrid (online & offline) team working from a shared office in Jakarta, we currently lack direct control or visibility over the building’s energy or water usage and those used at each employees’ home, even more so for our field teams. This limits our ability to measure pinpoint accurate electricity and air-conditioning emissions. That said, we are committed to integrating better carbon tracking tools as we grow and we plan to begin monitoring our emissions more comprehensively once we move into a more independent office space.

Lastly, our Land & Life scored 1.6. Given that ecosystem restoration is our core business, this score might seem surprising, but it reflects how the assessment values more formal, quantitative biodiversity management practices. While our fieldwork consistently centers on native species recovery and long-term ecological monitoring. And although not captured in this period’s score, we have improved our waste disposal and recycling efforts, particularly around plastic separation in both our Jakarta office and field hubs. These upgrades were implemented during the assessment period. So many of these practices were not yet systematically documented at the time of assessment. We’re now taking steps to formalize these practices and track it more rigorously and we’re hopeful they will be reflected in our next evaluation.

Even though, as shown in the comparison table, Bumiterra is leading in the Environment category relative to many peers, we have to admit that this dimension of the assessment is challenging, even for a company like ours that centers its mission around the environment. It requires structure, data, and operational precision. The forests we restore are one side of the equation. The way we work is the other. But that doesn’t mean we’re slowing down. We’re fully committed to improving even further, step by step.

🤝 5. Customers (4.4/5)

Comparison of our company’s performance across four contexts average

And the lastly, at Bumiterra, our customers are partners in restoring the planet. Our Customers score of 4.4 out of 5 reflects the systems we’ve put in place to ensure ethical, high-quality, and socially conscious service delivery.

We’re proud to work with companies that want to make a real climate impact, not just on paper. Our approach to customer stewardship centers around transparency, impact verification, and collaborative design. We walk our partners through every step: from choosing the right program and reforestation scale to receiving updates on tree growth, biodiversity indicators, and carbon sequestration data, we ensure our clients are deeply engaged throughout all steps of the restoration process.

This score recognizes our strong foundation in ethical marketing, data responsibility, and client collaboration, especially in a sector where clarity and credibility matter. It also reflects our work in making climate action more accessible by integrating storytelling into our service offerings. We believe responsible growth includes responsible communication. Whether it’s through our reports, social media, or direct partnerships, we aim to make sustainability not just accessible, but genuinely transformative. For our clients, our communities, and our planet.

🚀 Looking Ahead: Our Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Getting the B Corp certification is an appreciated step in our journey. We’re grateful and honored to bear such a title, but it is not a finish line.

It is, instead, a checkpoint, a mirror, and a new challenge.

This certification reminds us that doing good is not a one-time act or a fixed destination, but a continuous commitment to evolve with the needs of our planet and our communities. Being a B Corp means we’ve chosen to be held accountable, not just by ourselves, but by a global standard and a community of changemakers who are all striving to balance the economy growth with purpose. We thank the B Lab for validating the work we’ve done so far: from empowering Indigenous communities, to restoring degraded ecosystems, to making climate action more accessible and measurable. But more importantly, thank you for challenging us to push further.

Of course, we didn’t start Bumiterra just to be “certified.” We started because we believe in regeneration! Of forests, of livelihoods, of trust. And that kind of work demands more than recognition. It demands consistency, curiosity, and care. So while we celebrate this milestone with our team, our partners, and the communities we walk with, we do so knowing that the real work continues. That we are still learning. That we are still growing. And that we remain committed to building a future where business and biodiversity thrive together.

Thank you for believing in us!

We’re proud, we’re thankful, but we’re not done!

For the future – hand in hand with the Earth, and you.
